Windows 8 Developer Edition!

Have you been waiting for Windows 8 desperately? Have you tried the developer version yet? Well, I have tried Windows 8 developer edition on my laptop and desktop computer and I am very pleased with what Microsoft has done for us in the form of Windows 8. So let us get started with this short overview because it is not exactly a review:

Windows 8 Review

  • The boot-screen has been changed to nothingness and now we only see few dots chasing each other in circles as the operating system boots.
  • Windows 8 is more about security and touch sensitive interface than for latest computers or laptops.
  • You still have DirectX 11.0 with Windows 8, which I think will be upgraded to DirectX 11.1 when the final version of this operating system rolls out.
  • Now having a password in the login screen is must and there is one more way to make your login safer. Now you get picture gestures as password. It is secure because only you would know the pattern for gestures on your selected picture.
  • The main screen or desktop is now an app which is available among other apps. Since this is a developer version focussed for tablets rather than desktop PCs, I think that it will be changed back to the normal Desktop screen like we are familiar with Windows 7.
  • Everything is now optimized for touch. Sliding your fingers from left to right will bring you Charms toolbar that does what taskbar used to do in Windows 7.
  • The control panel is also available as an app and can be accessed via our usual desktop app. The control panel shows the most common settings for tablet pc; however, with a single click our good old control panel with familiar icons can be accessed.
  • There are few games that accompanied Windows 8 developer edition. I am not sure if they will be part of retail version or not.
  • Typing directly from home screen is still intact. However, now we don’t have to press Windows key. We can type right away and Windows 8 will quickly search for apps and files that we are looking for.
  • If you are sure enough that typing “Paint” will open “paint” as first app, then you don’t really have to wait. You can type “paint” and hit “Enter” without waiting another second.
  • As a matter of fact, it does save a lot of time, while working with several applications.
  • I am pretty sure that Windows 8 for PC will be retouched for a better experience because we are nowhere close to cheap touch-screen monitors. So, we will have to deal with the good old combination of mouse and keyboard.
  • As far as comparison with Windows 7 goes. Currently, Windows 8 developer edition is using more resources than Windows 7 and acquiring more size on the hard-disk than our previous windows. I guess these are those things that will be revisited again by Microsoft and will be corrected in the final build.
  • All in all, I am really excited with Windows 8 because if I actually get one of those touch monitors then the experience will be amazing. Also, I want to see better graphics and multi-graphics card support in the latest build. I want my AMD and Nvidia cards working together.
  • I am sure that there is a work around and I hope that they consider this for once.

This was just a small gist of what Windows 8 is. I didn’t want to make it another 800+ words article of mine, so I am cutting it short. Later then friends, take care and have fun with Windows 8 developer version. Ciao.

Hi there Penny, a rename might be a possibility but it is Windows 8 for the time being.

The driver support is the same, probably because this is just a developer version and Microsoft wants us to play with it and tell them about problems.

Why don't you try Windows 8 in Virtual PC? That way you will be able to tell if it is worth upgrading for you or not!

I wonder if they will rename it to windows touch or some such thing.

The pictorial password thing sounds good.

Do think they have improved driver support?

We've only just got windows 7 st home so it'll be a few years till we get to try 8 I expect.

The speed is not upto the mark yet 39clues and I hope that it could use less space than 13GB for developer version.

Also, I would like to point out that I downloaded (from Microsoft website - link provided) the user only version and I was a little disappointed to see the size it acquired after complete installation.

For now it is great for a developer version but there are so many things to improve in the final retail version.

Why don't you try the same in Parallels and tell me how it works for you!

I haven't tried the developer version, but I've read a lot about it and it seems really great. The UI features and connecting things will surely help a lot. Those are the main problems I have with Windows 7 (I run it in Parallels on my Mac Pro, and I also used to dual boot in Bootcamp; on my Mac Pro and MacBook Pro, too), so I can't wait to see those changed and/or improved.

Thanks for the article. Also, how is the speed and how do you think it will be (in the final version)? I'm assuming that the new standard will be six to eight gigabytes, just like the two to four gigabyte jump from XP to 7.

Yeah it it! But I am sure that retail version will be much better!
