Anime for Kids

Rating Anime Doesn't Qualify it for Kids

How do you think these animes are rated? How do you judge if an Anime is appropriate for your kids or not and a very important question is, How is an Anime different than a cartoon?

These are worthless questions, isn’t it? The main reason is that, when I was categorizing those Animes that I have seen until now, this question popped up in my mind. I mean, I could categorize them by their default genre taken from Wikipedia, but once this question hit my mind, I could not just walk away from it.

Well, you do know some default genre or categories, like romantic comedy, mecha, super natural, slice of life, science-fiction, comedy, adventure, etc. However, I didn’t know how to categorize them further. I am not sure if my friends will be fine with watching Naruto Shippuden with me or not, or if I can watch Ah! My Goddess with my little sister comfortably or not.

Anyway, I came to conclude this with just one plain sentence; I can’t definitely watch any of these with my parents! If you are wondering why, then I have to tell you that, parents think these anime (and cartoons) as kids stuff.

Seriously think about this, kids don’t make these things and if nobody will watch those (even kids) then who on earth is going to watch these animes that are clearly not nice and cozy. You have to agree me on this one, anime do have a tint of adulthood in their episodes (every single one of them).

Personally, I like to watch Romantic Comedy Anime and I do have a justification for that:

  • I love to watch comedy animes because I like to get rid of this routine of my life once in a while.
  • Then, with a slice of ‘romance’ in ‘comedy’, everything just feels so darn perfect that it gives me a perfect cool down when I feel upset about something.
  • Of course, I am not suggesting that watching anime is a very great get away, but they do come as an option.

If you ask me about my favorite romantic comedy anime then, I would happily say ‘Ouran High School Host Club’ and I just can’t get over it. I have to be honest with you on this; I once toppled off the couch while watching it.

Now, let me say something about Cartoons! Watching cartoons was fun when I was little and I must say, they were (and are) for kids, however, I got never connected with them. There was no story and any serious plot or if there ever was one, it did not enter my heart right away and I couldn’t wait for that to happen.

Now, there was this one cartoon that appealed to me for the very first time. I loved it so much that I used to wait for its episode to come. I used to hurry up from my coaching (tuition) and things like that.

After coming off my shell, growing up, I came to know what the case was for real! It was an anime, my very first one, Dragon Ball Z.

I agree that it was for kids but a different one as well. It had a goal, something to thrive for, teenage jokes like nose bleeds (and the reason for that to happen *wink*), a perverted old man (with guts to hit on young girls and body to recover from terrible beatings), etc.

It was not some silly bugs laughing around, kids in sand, cat chasing a mouse, a sailor who can become a superman with spinach, etc. I don’t know, why that cartoon had such a theme, but it could not make ‘me’ eat spinach!

There is a better and advanced side to cartoons (it opened to me just few years ago and I really regret it, because I lost so much) and that’s is what I think Anime is all about and not just Japanese Cartoons, which would be the technical explanation to the word “Anime”.

A boy who wants to gain respect from his village, a wimpy and weak boy who wants to learn martial arts so that he can protect those who are close to him, a girl who loves darkness and fights the flashing world of flashing creatures, a boy who wants to have a girlfriend in his life and ends up having a really awesome Goddess…. (this can go on and on)

However, this is why I love anime so much and I call them cartoon for adults. They somehow relax me in a different manner and to tell you the truth, I connect myself to those stories in one way or another. You won’t believe me, but when I got sick of watching Ranma and Akane (from Ranma 1/2) fight all the time and not saying ‘I love you’ to each other. I actually thought of writing a story about two of them getting married together.

So, I am pretty sure that I have not answered the question, but I did fill some gaps. Rest is yours to decide and fill out other gaps in the comment section below.

That is so true Fiction and Life. But, ah!, what can we do? I like anime a lot but can only watch them when I am alone. :(

anime is not for kids, and unlike many old fashioned adults, they dont realize some of the content these animes hold is actually very mature and life changing.

I see many of my favorites anime (no not naruto, im far too experienced to considered anywhere near my top 5ths) as fictions books. Just like in fictions books you get to experience different scenarios and how characters deal and struggle in them.

I have watched anime for a long time and although at first i might have started watching "kid" stuff, slowly but steadily i discovered how anime contained real teaching and tackled problems many of us deal with.

Go Icetruker, you made me seriously very happy! I still can't get my father to believe that it is not all that lovey-dovey-cuty cartoon stuff.

But Oh well, I obviously don't watch anything from his side as well. He likes news and I like news based on gadgets only. So, we are kind of living in our own worlds and we are settled quite well there.

How about your family man, besides this happy news?

that is so what i was thinking my mum and dad are so like that they say dont see that its for kids, and im like its Hellsing for gods sake i would not let a kid see this he would go mad from the experinece. but i got my dad to see death note and he loves it, so im solwly converting he to anime but its hard.

I agree, but for the most part I think it really depends on the anime. As a kid I watched DBZ, Sailor Moon, Pokemon, Digimon, and other various anime before I was aware that there was a difference between anime and cartoons. Anime really does touch the heart more than your average cartoon, and those feelings stick with you forever. There are anime appropriate for kids, and anime appropriate for adults. That's the best thing about it - there is something for everyone~

Great hub, btw~ Very thought provoking!

Thats a tough one. Its a 4-way tie between .Hack//Sign, Code Geass, Azumanga Daioh, and Ouran Host Club. I can't make up my mind and there are different reasons why i like each one.

I really liked this hub. I have to agree with you that anime isn't necessarily for kids, most of them have a mature them to them that makes them inappropriate for kids to watch
