Tata Docomo have started spreading their 3G network even further with USB stick and a wider coverage area for 3G connectivity. So, I thought to give it a try where 3G is recently launched, Gwalior (M.P.), India. I would be doing the test with Tata Docomo 3G HSUPA USB device, which is capable of delivering 7.2 Mbps of maximum 3G speed. So… let’s get started.
When you connect the stick in usb port of your computer, you can see Docomo 3G window attempting to install some necessary driver.
You have to click Autorun, so that the software, which comes within the USB stick gets installed and ready to go.
A shortcut is made on your desktop by the name: Tata Docomo 3G and is easily recognizable from its 3G icon.
Here’s the picture of the software itself:

- As you can see that there are plenty of options and they are just worthless because I don’t use them and you would not as well, it’s just a matter of time.
- So, the HSUPA device has two modes, i.e. 2G and 3G. 2G speeds are horrible and are slower than Airtel GPRS. Though they (Tata Docomo) claim that the speed would not be less than 128 Kbps (which is already horrible), they don’t live up to the promise and speeds are seriously lower than that. Pages don’t load, download speeds are 5-10 kbps (on IDM) and forget about watching videos on YouTube.
- That was 2G part and I needed to let you know that if you are going to buy this device because they (Tata Docomo) promised you that your connection will not be interrupted (or disconnect) and your device will automatically switch from 3G to 2G where 3G is not available, then, please oh please! Don’t let that fool you.
- 2G speeds are horrible and I am going to say it again, they will give you a demo when 3G is working and you will be amazed to see how amazingly fast it is (I agree to the fact that 3G is really fast).
- Now, I will say that this device is not as great as you think it would be (if you are charmed by HSUPA thing), it costs only Rs.2000/-, so you might guess how the antenna and receiver would be in this device. In comparison to that, my N73 works great with Docomo 3G and is able to find some mighty fine spots where 3G is available and where this ‘device’ detects only 2G.
- I know that N73 is capable of delivering only 385 Kbps, but I can depend on it and if you have some other fully compatible 3G phone then you should stick with it and not with ‘USB stick’.
Currently 3G stick is not as great as advertised and I suggest you buy a 3G SIM, be it from Vodafone, Airtel, BSNL or Tata Docomo and test it with 1 or 2 day sachet packs, because 3G is definitely fast and you will get the same speed on your computer or laptop. You can connect your phone via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, my phone supports only Bluetooth 2.0, hence the range and data transmission is limited, but with Wi-Fi, you can transmit up to 3.6 Mbps and more (its 54 Mbps to be precise). So, don’t opt for 3G USB stick, even if it is from any operator, you should buy a 3G phone with Wi-Fi and it is available under Rs.10,000/- and you will never regret it because what matters is connection and speed.
Tell me if you have any queries or any doubts before heading over to any operator’s office and buy USB stick, which you will not love so much, especially in India, because 3G tower upgrades are still in process.

guys practically speaking ,if your appetite for download is less then tata docomo is alright. but if you want to download above 5gb then it could be a disaster. 700MB takes close to a day to download in torrents after you complete 5gb data usage
This is regarding Tata Docomo 3g stick Karnataka. If you want to get irritating yourself, choose this. It will reach the speed what they told on an occassion. The fluctuations are very high. I have the 3.1 stick 1000/- plan (postpaid) and most of the time i am getting a speed of 0.3 Mbps 0.5 Mbps. I had raised so many complaints from past 4 months, but the issue is not resolved yet. They are telling ....... and passing the days. In a month you will get hardly 4 to 5 days of good speed. Dont expect more than that from docomo.
That does not mean that it isn't a device to be discussed Pawan. If it didn't work for you that doesn't mean that it won't work for others.
Stop despising gadgets on that record please.
tata docomo ka naam mat le. sabse gaya gujra service hai, mere yahan toh tower hamesha hi 0 rahta hai chahe ghar ke ander ya bahar...........
Thanks for the info Dr. Pratik.
Doxology does cap your speed about 500kbps not KBPs and they claim to have 21mbps network which I dont believe.
Same goes for idea.
they also cap speed to same level as tata.
Only thing is here is Maharashtra idea network rollout is faster than docomo.
who introduced it first in Maharashtra.
I know JoannaD about 3G and 2G options in the settings but I am pointing about the signal strength that this estick comes with. My Samsung Galaxy Ace works like a charm and captures signals where the stick just does not. So... what i am saying is... the stick is great if you are living somewhere where the signal strength is awesome. However, when u really do need an internet at a place where the strength is low... estick is just a worthless device.
The speed is wonderful and nearly every smartphone comes with 7.2 mbps speed support and guess what... there is so much more that you can do with a smartphone than an estick besides connecting to internet.
Also, if you can pay the heavy fees of Tata Docomo 3G, then you can certainly manage to go for a nice smartphone. Just saying friend and it is just my opinion, nothing universal!
Plz tell me abt ur experiment with Blackberry BOld 9780 when u have time JoannaD. :)
Krish, google it.
kksonakiya, you can choose the option to keep it "3G only" instead of "3G preferred" though I find it kind of absurd that they have a third option of "2G only" ... why in the world would anyone want to have 2G only on a 3G stick? Beats me!
I've had the Docomo stick for about 3 months now, and it's been okay so far, downloading torrents has given me up to 300kbps download speed max, which means that my actual speed is 3Mbps, though I am paying for the 7.2 Mbps. Tried to get an answer out of them regarding WHY this is so, what they said was 7.2 Mbps is for everyone, so basically this 7.2 gets divided by the number of people using, and that if ever I was the only one using my stick and everyone else had theirs turned off, then only I can get 7.2.. this just shows you how misleading advertising regarding internet in this country is.. MEH.. Though this idea of tethering my connection is interesting... I have a Blackberry Bold 9780 which has 3G capabilities, so I'll see if tethering will get me higher speeds on my laptop... Thanks for the advice :)
how can i connect my laptop to mobile internet via wifi
am using samsung corby pro which has both wifi and 3G
so please let me know how to connect my laptop to mobile via wifi
Yeah Abhishrek, you will get only 3.6 kbps of maximum speed under 1000 rupees plans and 7.2 plans at greater charge.
Here's a link for Docomo 3G plans and capping. Also, if you opt for any unlimited plan, keep in mind that once you hit your download limit (whatever it is, like 5GB for Rs.1000), your speed will be reduced to 144 kbps, which is trust me, absurd.
tatadocomo(dot)com/3g-plans.aspx
(please replace that dot with . )
I can help you with an increase in speed but plz don't opt for Docomo Estick without first having a demo at your place (and not at their center).
Have any idea on Docomo 3G speed capping?

there is MASSIVE FRAUD in INTERNET SPEED Advertising in this country. As you must have seen from the 2g "Scam", there is NO ADULT SUPERVISION OF THIS INDUSTRY, IT EXISTS FOR MONEY LAUNDERING PURPOSE. IT IS A CASH BUSINESS in 3rd world.
It is NOT USEFUL to post a one time speed test and think you are cool! Too many third rate blog posts have posted a one time speedtest.net result which means crap.
Better to provide monthly aggregate results such as you get in linux from vnstat. But then, this is india. Not gonna happen. Remember, Evil corporations and evil government fleece the stupid people. Become smart and stop this speedtest nonsense. One time high burst of internet doesnt' count for s***.
I have reliance broadband+ dongle for last 1 year! regular use. day and night. can't ever....EVER...see a video in the year 2011 from this 3rd world setup. Let's be honest in this "demockracy".
