Out of Net? Let us Get You There!
Are you out of 3G and wireless networks around you? Do you want to share your Ethernet broadband with your Smartphone? Do you want to access internet at lower costs on roaming, like when you are in a hotel and the charges are seriously low in comparison to your mobile operator? Then, friends, this might be just the thing that you need to read in order to access seamless internet on your Smartphone.
This article explains the procedure involved in accessing internet on your Smartphone. I have tried this on multiple Smartphones, like, Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830, Nokia N8, etc. and it worked really well. The process is simple and you don’t have to mess with any script or windows settings whatsoever. So let’s get down to work and have your internet running in your good old Smartphone.
Things you’ll need
- Windows 7 or Windows Vista or Windows XP
- Connectify Software (for Windows) to turn your laptop or desktop into a wireless hub.
- Little bit of free time, only 10 minutes should do the trick.
- Wireless Hardware for Laptops or Wi-Fi Adapter for Desktops.
- A Wi-Fi Enabled Smartphone.
Procedure
- Download the software by following the link.
- Install the software and run it (obvious one).
- Rather than going for Easy Setup Wizard, you can quickly enter details on the window and hit Start Hotspot.
- Enter the values like this:
- Wi-Fi Name : Can be any name as you please, so that you can remember your hotspot created on your personal laptop just in case, there are several lying around in your apartment.
- Password: must be 8 characters long and can be anything from 1-0 or A-Z. This is to protect your hotspot from unauthorized access.
- Internet: This is the most important part of this process, because here you will allow Connectify to share your internet via Connectify Hotspot. All you have to do is, select the network connection via drop down list and Connectify will let your device access the network when you connect it.
- In my case (and probably yours too), if you are connected via Ethernet broadband then you should select Local Area Connection.
- There is nothing else to enter now. So, just hit Start Hotspot and your Smartphone should now detect a hotspot that you can now connect to and browse web on your Smartphone.
· For those who would like to know what happens if they click on Easy Setup Wizard, here is a snapshot of the dialog that appears and guides you through the process in easy steps.
What is so special about this process?
You might be wondering why you should follow this process when you can easily create a Wireless Ad-hoc connection in your Wi-Fi enabled laptop or desktop. The thing is that Android 2.2 doesn’t detect Ad-hoc connection because it is not enabled inside the deep layers of Android 2.2 coding. Rather than going through the trouble of rooting (and sometimes bricking your device), you can quickly create a Wireless Hub via Connectify and connect your Wi-Fi enabled Smartphone to access unlimited internet (as per your ISP plan of course) at significantly low costs than 3G or GPRS (especially on roaming).
You can also connect your other laptops via this process by creating a central hub and accessing the internet on them.
If you worried about how to get this thing working on Android 2.2, then here’s a little procedure for that.
- Open Menu> Settings> Wireless and Networks> Wi-Fi Settings> Turn ON Wi-Fi if it is turned off and you should see your Wi-Fi Hotspot (by the name you used in Connectify) in Wi-Fi Networks list.
- Click on it and it should ask you for a password. Enter the password that you typed in Connectify’s password field and hit ok. Let the device remember the connection, so that you don’t have to enter the password every time you want to connect to internet.
- Everything is done now and if you followed the procedure exactly as I told you. Then you should have your broadband connection working just fine on your device.
This tip is universal as long as you have a Wi-Fi enabled device, laptop, Connectify and internet running in your computer. Thanks for sticking with me and have a happy surfing.

Hi jeyaramd, thanks for the follow up. I am glad this article helped.
wow. Information I am looking for. I always try to look for hotspots for my laptop. This is great. I could use this especially while waiting in the car. Thats time well spent. I can't wait to try it. Hopefully, it works for Ipad 2 or the upcoming IPad 3. This is awesome. Thanks for sharing. This hub is great. Voted up.
Hi Prem Chandra. Glad to have your comment.
The operating system doesn't matter actually. Also, the Android phone (whatever version) isn't actually designed to recognise wifi signal from a laptop.
That's why we need connectify. you have to make sure that connectify is running and is sharing your LAN Internet.
I have been saying this one thing again and again throughout the comments that Connectify creates a hotspot in your laptop that any android device (or any wifi-enabled device) will certainly recognize!
Plz give it a try and tell me if it works or not.
Also, you have to change nothing regarding wifi settings from your laptop, all you have to do is Turn ON Wifi via switch or a key. Rest is Connectify's work! Try it friend.
Hi, I am running my laptop on Windows Vista Home with SP2. My Android phone runs 2.2 My phone wont detect the hotspot. Googling the same made me realise that Windows Vista will only work as Adhoc and many android phone wont detect Adhoc... Any solutions?
Hi there Dhanwinder Singh, thanks for commenting.
First of all, you have to turn On the Wi-fi adapter if it isn't by a switch or key on your laptop (on desktop pc the adapter is pretty much ON by default).
Run connectify after that and wait for your phone to detect the new wifi connection.
I am using the lite version of Connectify too and it works great. In the lite version, we cannot manage several connections but we can add multiple connections.
I can look into your problem further with Join.me. If you want further assistance then tell me about it and we can arrange an online chat.
What Smartphone do you have Dhanwinder?
Hi frend,Wat to do with Wi-Fi adapter as u mentioned above and how to use it.? I am using windows xp and phone with Android 2.3.4.Also the screenshots of ur free version do not match with mine lite version plus i am not able to type hotspot name and PWord in given places in Connectify. On top of it i am getting the msg that service not running.Pl suggest me wat to do? thanks
Thanks Julz09, glad to have your response.
Yeah it works on most android phones and even to connect two laptops or tablet pc or pads, etc.
Pretty much anything that you want to connect via Wi-Fi. :)
great hub :) does this work on most android phones?
why not? is there some problem with it Raru?
i am using connectify but not satisfy
Hi Maheshkandpal, thanks for dropping by.
You don't need to root your smartphone to get it working. Also, Connectify works great with Vista too. Here is a simple gist of the process:
Download and install connectify> Start a wireless hotspot via running Connectify> Turn ON Wi-Fi in your device and it should connect automatically.
I don't know buddy what's going wrong because I have updated Connectify to the latest build, i.e. Connectify 3.1, and it is working great.
Try it again man, that is all I can say right now.
hmm.. but I m using Windows Vista wherein I m unable to connect as a Wifi Hotspot (it allows only Adhoc connection). I tried rooting Android phone but unable to go further due to lack of knowledge. Please help me out. Maybe you can share me the older version for example.
No coolboy, it is not useless. I am using the free version for past 3 months and it works like charm.
I don't know how you are using it but I don't think that it is useless. It is awesome man.
you have to pay for it to use it! Free version is useless!
