AMD Radeon HD 6770 Problems

By

AMD Radeon HD 6770 comes with many goodies. But we already know that things like these always suffer a lot from end-user front.

So… let me tell you what problems you might face with Radeon HD 6770. The main problem which end-users are facing right now is lack of driver support.

Many other problems are related with software and might be fixed with the latest driver update via AMD: version 11.6.

Some unresolved / resolved problems:

  • Some Blu-ray playback feels jittery
  • Star Wars Jedi Knight II / Jedi Academy randomly crashes on Launch
  • Display corruption may be observed while changing video resolution

After updating the driver, my friend felt many issues were gone regarding game performances, like Crysis, Just Cause 2, Grid 2, Left for Dead 2, etc. and some 1080p playback on Windows Media Player.

Also, the rendering time on Adobe Photoshop CS5 has improved than before and OpenGL is now working for him (though in many cases, other friends have reported that the issue is still intact).

As I said above that the Blu-ray playback on Windows Media Player still feels stiff and sometimes turns up the heat in this card.

Stars Wars Jedi Knight II is still crashing on his desktop as soon as he launches it. However, after setting up restrictions via troubleshooting the game’s EXE file and running it in compatibility mode for Windows Vista SP1, it resolved. The performance is better than before as expected but on some occasions it crashed few times.

The problem related to display corruption was seen when we connected the computer to a Full HD 32-inch Samsung LED Series 4 television and cranked up the resolution all the way to 1920X1080.

Text and images did not look clearer and crispier; however, the colors became very bright in comparison to a little lower resolution. Fortunately, after updating driver, the issue has been resolved and games are looking amazing on the television.

Overheating and Loud Noise

Overheating is occurring while playing Blu-ray content and loud noise is seen while playing Crysis 2 on hardcore settings, Mass Effect 2 on maximum settings and World of Warcraft: Cataclysm.

However, rest was great and the card performed cooler than Nvidia GTX 540 and had no problems with other games and applications.

So… It appears that Radeon HD 6770 isn’t exactly your favorite graphics card but it does perform well. The issues related to this card aren’t that large that one would not go for it.

A new driver is on its way according to an update by AMD and that should fix other problems with HD 6770 too. Till then, we will have to deal with these problems on our own should they occur.

The best thing to do with crashing games and applications is trying to make them compatible with Windows Vista SP1 with the help of troubleshooting. This fixes a lot of applications that aren’t familiar with the latest graphics card or don’t work at optimum level with it.

Problems like overheating can be fixed by going for a cheap cooling solution. Other solution could be shutting down the computer after a work or gaming of 3 to 4 hrs.

I’ll wait for the next driver update and post the results here. Thanks for reading this piece.

Hi Sam, with an AMD 6770, you can easily get 1920X1080 resolution and fps=30-40 depending on other settings.

I would suggest you that you use an old driver. Also, I would like you to scan your computer for possible virus, that may alter your graphics settings and turn your resolution back to 720X480.

Try Avast, if you haven't and scan the system at Boot Time (it has the option).

Tell me if this solves your problem or not. Ciao. :)
